FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is Lomi Lomi and how is it different to the
full body massage?
Lomi Lomi is a Hawaiian word, which means to
massage, to rub or to knead. This workshop
is very spiritual in nature. The workshop
will not only teach you a full body Hawaiian
massage that incorporates energy work, lymphatic
drainage and relaxation techniques, but it is
also a retreat that will take you on your own
personal healing journey in order to prepare you
to step into the role of a healer to deliver
this deeply spiritual massage. It is a
massage that was given in the temples of ancient
Hawaii as part of a rite of passage. The
full body workshop on the other hand will teach
you to give a standard Swedish massage and does
not require any training in energy work or
healing.
What is a Kahuna?
A Kahuna is the Hawaiian word for an
expert.
Its literal translation is “keeper of the
secret” referring to someone who holds a talent
or skill in a particular field that others do
not. It is someone accomplished in
his or her particular field – such as canoe
building, temple building, dancing or singing,
healing etc. and their expertise helped the
family and the community. The task of the
Ka huna would be to teach and pass on their
talents and skills (secrets) to the family or “ohana”.
Therefore a “Kahuna” of Lomi Lomi is someone who
is an expert at Hawaiian Lomi Lomi.
What
is a shaman?
A
Shaman is a holy man or women. The word
Shaman comes from the Tungus people in Siberia
and its literal translation would be “one who
sees in the dark” To put it more simply, when
you close your eyes in prayer or meditation, you
are turning the gaze away from the outer world
of ego and illusion and returning your gaze on
the inner world, the void, to feel the
unseen. When you feel the presence of the
Divine you are “seeing” with the eyes of a
Shaman.
What
is Kahuna Lomi Lomi?
Kahuna
Lomi Lomi
is a form of massage that was handed down by a
Hawaiian Kahuna, Kahu Abraham. Early on in
his own personal training he developed a style
of bodywork known as Romi Kaparere,
which is known throughout the world as Kahuna
bodywork and Temple Style Lomi.
A beautiful visual example of an adaptation of
this form of Temple work is offered in the DVD
“Sacred Lomi” presented by Tom Cochran and his
wife Donna. To
see a short preview offered on YouTube click on
the link on the main workshop page.
Kahu Abraham Kawai’i felt that the wealth
inherent in Hawaiian culture could be taught
outside of its cultural framework, and
formulated strategies to teach the principles at
work rather than anything specifically Hawaiian.
Where
does "Shamanic" Kahuna Lomi Lomi come from?
With deep respect and gratitude I thank Kahu
Abraham Kawai’i and Mamuadevi for giving us the
blessing of the Kahuna bodywork.
In ancient Hawaii, each Ohana (family) had
their particular style of Lomi Lomi. My
Ohana, (family), Kahu Mamuadevi, added Her rich
personality and profound understanding to the
Kahuna Lomi Lomi and when it was close to the
time to make her transition, she passed this
form on to me to carry on.
My contributions to my Ohana style is the
Shamanic exercises offered in an attempt to
quickly, safely and efficiently bring the
participant to a deeper understanding.
Thus, the word “Shamanic” has been added to
“Kahuna Lomi Lomi”.
Kahu Abraham stepped out of this existence into
the next in 2004. Mamuadevi stepped out of
her existence in 2006, but their work continues.
What will I
learn in Shamanic/Kahuna Lomi Lomi workshop?
Some
things cannot be learned from reading a book or
watching a DVD. Some things need the power
of a felt experience if they are to become
awakened in you, realized and fully understood.
This workshop provides the opportunity for that
felt experience. This calling is for those
who feel ready to venture into an experiential
learning..
In
the Four Day Workshop participants will learn
the following:

To give and receive a complete Kahuna Lomi
Lomi massage covering the front and back of
the body.
-
Principles of Kahuna Lomi Lomi through
Shamanic exercises and movement. The
workshop offers a safe and supportive
environment for participants to deepen their
awareness of themselves - offering the
conviction of the “felt experience” of the
power of Lomi Lomi
-
The ethics of caring and how to create a
safe and sacred space for Kahuna Lomi Lomi.
(Shamanic and Kahuna principles and practices
of this sacred work, are applied every day as an
opportunity to experience transformation)

How does Shamanic/Kahuna Lomi Lomi differ
from other Massage modalities?
Shamanic/Kahuna Lomi Lomi
is a holistic form of massage. It views
the body as the temple of the soul. The
touch is reverent, nurturing and filled with
Aloha – the presence of God.
Most massage modalities focus on the physical
needs of the body from stress, poor posture, to
localized pain such as whiplash or carpal
tunnel. Shamanic/Kahuna Lomi Lomi
addresses all aspects of the human being as an
integrated whole which includes the physical,
emotional, mental and spiritual rather than
focusing on any one particular aspect.
Shamanic Kahuna Lomi Lomi does not “treat” or
“heal” you. It is a vehicle through which
you may come closer to your own divine nature.
How
much of this workshop is “hands-on” compared to
lecture?
This workshop is approximately 20 percent
lecture with audiovisual presentations, and 70
percent hands-on learning. Lecture and
audiovisual presentations are kept to a minimum
and are considered just as important to the
learning in offering the necessary understanding
to what you are addressing when working with the
energy of Shamanic and Kahuna principles.
The traditional way of the ancient Hawaiians
will be adhered to which includes explanation,
demonstration followed by practice through
giving and receiving and ending with sharing.
If
I take your course, will I be Certified?
On completion of the course you will receive a
Certificate of Completion, which will permit you
as an active, licensed massage therapist,
cosmetologist, esthetician and
minister/healer/energy worker to offer Kahuna
Lomi Lomi massage in your practice.
